Take Care of Your Feet This Summer

Summertime can be fun and exciting, but it can also be dangerous when it comes to your feet. Because people want to be active in the summer, injuries can abound. Thankfully, knowing what injuries to look out for can help you understand what is going on with your feet and ankles.

Injuries That Occur in The Summer

  • Ankle Sprains–an ankle sprain is a common injury. It happens often, but it can occur when your ligaments that support the ankle stretch and tear. A sprain can occur when you play sports, but simply walking through your house can also occur. It most commonly happens with runners. Because they are common due to strenuous activity, it is recommended that you stop your workout immediately and rest your ankle if you notice swelling, bruising, pain, discoloration, or swelling in your ankle. If it feels stiff, this is another sign that you should stop immediately.

  • Stress fractures–a stress fracture is when you have tiny cracks in the bones of your foot. Repetitive force and overuse are the main reasons this issue can occur, but if you have weaker bones due to other conditions, you are far more likely to experience these types of fractures. Stress fractures are seen primarily in athletes, people who have begun exercising with excessive force, or people who wear the wrong shoes because they don't support the foot. The condition is painful, and you will experience tenderness and swelling. When you return to your activity, it can be painful as well.

If you experience these issues, don't let them get worse. See a podiatrist and let them help you with your pain before it worsens and causes permanent damage.
