Nail fungus occurs when bacteria thrive underneath your nails. As the infection gets worse and untreated, your nail will begin to thicken and crumble. As a person with diabetes, you will have issues with nail fungus that occurs more heavily due to reduced blood circulation. As a person with diabetes, if you experience toenail fungus, you should obtain a podiatrist's help immediately to prevent dangerous issues.  However, there are very simple ways to help your feet stay safe.

How to Care for Your Feet

  • Avoid polish—to avoid nail fungus; you will need to give up polish and fake nails as they attract bacteria, leading to nail issues.

  • Choose the proper footwear—don’t choose shoes that are not able to let your feet breathe. Choose a material that will help your feet avoid sweat and moisture because that invites fungus to your toes.

  • Wear shoes in pool areas—never go barefoot in pool areas or locker rooms. Always wear the proper footwear to avoid moisture and bacteria that thrive on the floors.

  • Wear the proper socks—wearing sweat-absorbing socks will ensure that your feet stay dry. Nail fungus loves moisture, so avoiding it is crucial. It would help if you created a warm and dry place for your feet. Add foot powder to keep your feet dry if you notice that your feet are still damp with these socks.

  • Trim your nails—when trimming the nails, go straight across and not too low down. You can utilize a file to smooth the edges but avoid pushing into your skin as you can cause cuts to appear. Disinfect your nail clippers afterward to prevent bacteria growing on the tools.
