Wearing the Wrong Shoes Can Cause Corns

A corn will appear on your foot when you constantly create friction and pressure within a particular spot. You will see a layer of thickened and hardened skin appear. While it may look ugly, it isn't painful in most cases. When it does become painful, you will need to see a podiatrist to avoid further complications. In particular, those who have diabetes need to be careful with corns as any tearing of the skin can lead to an infection.

Issues That Can Lead to Corns

  • Avoiding socks—when you wear shoes, you should always wear socks. By avoiding them, you create friction and rubbing, which will cause a corn to appear.

  • Wearing the wrong footwear—tight shoes and overly loose shoes are a problem because they both cause unnecessary rubbing due to the way your foot moves. Avoiding high heels should be avoided because they condense your toes, so there is an extraordinary amount of friction, and they affect your mobility over time.

  • Foot deformities—a foot deformity like hammertoes or claw toes will create a corn because the toe is bending at an unnatural angle. It causes you to step down with tremendous pressure, which will then cause these problems to occur.

  • Bone spurs—a bone spur is another issue that can make painful corns appear. However, you may find it difficult to determine whether it is the corn that is painful or the painful spur. Seeing a podiatrist then becomes necessary because they can fix both issues.
