Proper Foot Care and Foot Disorders
The feet are one of the most abused structures in the body. It is responsible for supporting our weight while keeping us balanced during explosive movements such as running or jumping. This is why foot injuries are quite common among athletes and those who practice an active lifestyle.
A visit to a podiatrist can help prevent future foot injuries. It is especially important when planning to start a running program or any activity that involves heavy use of the feet. Checkups include general assessment of the feet and diagnosis of any foot conditions.

The American Podiatric Medical Association emphasizes the importance of foot care especially for those who actively participate in sports and exercises. The stresses we place on our feet during these activities sometimes exceed the structural limits of our feet.
· Foot pain should never be ignored. If pain becomes chronic, this can indicate serious foot injury.
· Check your feet regularly for skin changes or wounds. Toenail discoloration for example could indicate infection. Swelling can be a sign of injury especially if accompanied by pain.
· Use proper footwear designed for that specific activity. Running shoes were designed in such a way to cushion some of the stress when running and provide additional foot strength.
· Wash your feet regularly keeping careful attention to areas between the feet. Dry it thoroughly to avoid moisture buildup. These conditions are ideal for fungal growth.
· Alternate you shoes and be sure to clean these regularly.
· Buy the right size of shoes. Be sure that your feet fits comfortable avoiding tight fitting shoes especially at the toes. Buy shoes later in the day when these are at its largest.
· Always wear sandals when using public baths which are notorious breeding ground for infection.
· Diabetics should schedule an appointment with a podiatrist regularly.
