Why diabetic patients should see their podiatrist on a regular basis

As a podiatrist, I cannot stress enough how important regular foot care is for individuals with diabetes. Diabetes can lead to a number of foot complications, some of which can be severe if not addressed early. By seeing your podiatrist regularly, we can monitor your foot health and take preventive measures to avoid complications.

One of the main concerns for diabetics is peripheral neuropathy, or nerve damage, which can cause loss of feeling in your feet. Without normal sensation, you might not notice cuts, blisters, or sores, leading to infection. Regular podiatry visits allow us to check for any signs of injury or irritation that could escalate without your awareness.

Another significant issue is poor circulation, often caused by diabetes. Reduced blood flow to your feet can make it harder for wounds to heal and increases the risk of infection. When injuries don’t heal properly, they can lead to ulcers, which, if left untreated, may result in serious complications, including the need for amputation. During our appointments, I can evaluate your circulation and address any concerns before they become serious.

In addition to nerve and circulation issues, diabetics are more prone to fungal infections, ingrown toenails, and calluses. These conditions may seem minor, but for someone with diabetes, they can lead to complications if not properly managed. Regular foot exams help catch these problems early and allow us to treat them promptly.

Finally, during each visit, we’ll discuss the importance of daily foot care, including inspecting your feet, wearing proper footwear, and maintaining good blood sugar control. Together, we can create a proactive approach to maintaining your foot health and preventing complications, ensuring you stay active and healthy.
