What to do if you sprain your ankle?
We understand how frustrating a sprained ankle can be, but prompt and proper care is essential for healing and preventing further injury.
First, rest is key. Avoid putting weight on the injured ankle for the first 24-48 hours. Use crutches if necessary to keep off your feet and prevent further damage.
Next, apply ice to the injured area. Wrap an ice pack in a cloth and place it on the ankle for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours for the first couple of days. This helps reduce swelling and inflammation. Never apply ice directly to the skin, as it can cause frostbite.
Compression is also important. Use an elastic bandage or ankle brace to wrap the injured ankle. This provides support and helps limit swelling. Be careful not to wrap it too tightly, as this can restrict circulation.
Elevation is another critical step. Try to keep your ankle elevated above the level of your heart, especially in the first 48 hours. This can reduce swelling and promote better blood flow to the injured area.
Over-the-counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage discomfort and reduce inflammation. However, if pain or swelling persists beyond a few days or if the ankle feels unstable, it’s important to seek professional help. You may need an X-ray or other diagnostic imaging to rule out a more serious injury, such as a fracture.
Finally, as your ankle starts to heal, gradual strengthening exercises are important. I’ll guide you through stretches and strengthening exercises to rebuild stability and range of motion. Returning to full activity too soon can risk re-injury, so we’ll work together to ensure a safe recovery.
