Comparing Custom Orthotics to Mass-Produced Shoe Inserts

One of the approaches that board-certified podiatrists use in the treatment of chronic foot pain is the prescription of custom orthotics for cushioning and support. They’re used often to correct issues with posture and gait that result from a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:

·       fallen arches

·       high arches

·       bunions

·       hammertoes

·       stress fractures

·       diabetic wounds

Orthotics are custom-made to address your particular problem. They are made according to your podiatrist’s specifications, after a careful examination that likely includes imaging through x-rays, computers, or other state-of-the-art technology

Over-the-counter shoe inserts are widely available at pharmacies and big box stores.  You might even see a display with a “computer imaging system.” Don’t be fooled! These devices will guide you toward one of only a handful of options. These inserts are not designed to address your specific problem and are not custom-made just for your feet.

You may also notice a price difference between custom orthotics and over-the-counter devices. It’s true that orthotics cost more. However, many insurance plans offer coverage. If your podiatrist suggests orthotics, a quick call to your insurance company will help you understand your plan. It’s also worth pointing out that, unlike orthotics from your podiatrist, those lower-cost inserts are not designed to last. They will need to be replaced several times per year, whereas your custom orthotics are made to last for five years or more. So, really, how much are you saving? That’s right: not much.
