Hitting the Gym Without Hurting Your Feet

When you come home after a strenuous workout, you are sore, right? That's normal. However, what isn't normal is your body hurting so bad you can't move for days. The best news, though, is that these problems are easily avoidable by making smarter decisions when you exercise. Once you do, your feet and ankles will be in much better shape.

How to Keep Your Feet Healthy

Don’t push too hard--when you exercise, don't push yourself beyond your limits and capabilities. When you do, you can experience muscle strains or sprains. Stretch before you work out and advance to a higher level gradually. Doing so will result in fewer injuries.

Wear the best socks--cotton socks will help you avoid blisters while synthetic sweat-absorbing socks can keep your feet dry. That protection will keep bacteria and fungus away from your toes.

Wear sandals--not while working out, mind you, but when you are walking from the shower or exiting the pool. Gyms are breeding grounds for fungus and bacteria. Avoid walking barefoot in public spaces.

Cover your injuries--if you have ingrown toenails, cracking skin or peeling feet, you need to cover them. This is especially important if you have diabetes because your feet are more prone to getting infected.

Change your shoes--athletic shoes are designed for exercise but can be pricey. Ideally, you want a shoe that cushions the heel, supports your arch, and isn't too small. When shoes are too tight, they can cause neuromas, and not having proper cushioning or support can cause plantar fasciitis.
