The Nerve of Those Neuromas

Neuromas can bring a lot of discomforts because they affect the nerves in the foot. A neuroma most commonly forms as a knot. Neuromas are not small ailments and should, therefore, be looked at right away since they involve nerve damage, which can be irreversible. Neuromas are actually scars of nerve tissue that usually occurs on the sensory nerve subsequent to it being injured by heavy shock or any other severe trauma. Neuromas frequently happen post-surgery because the procedures can affect nerves.

Treatment for this condition involves:

  • Avoiding huge impacts to the toes.

  • Limit the amount of walking until the neuroma is treated.

  • Remove shoes to massage the ball of the foot.

  • Soaking the injured area with hot water, rubbing the foot and using ice to treat pain.

  • Use of orthotics to reduce pressure in injured areas of the foot.

  • Ultrasound waves to reduce pain.

  • Anesthetics injections to numb pain.

  • Surgery may be required as a treatment to remove the injured nerve. In this procedure, a medical professional will find the nerve with this condition and extract it. After it has been removed, the tail end of the other nerve will be moved into an optimal position so as to avoid re-occurrence.

Neuromas can be managed when proper care is applied to them. When they are however allowed to develop further without any preventative treatment, they can cause significant complications that can result in the loss of sensation.
