Choosing a New Pair of Winter Boots
It's December and that means that winter has arrived. We've had our first snow already, and are bracing for more over the next few months. Of course, if you live in an area where winter is hard, you've got plenty of gear to help you cope‚ ice scrapers, snow blowers, warm outdoor gear, and more. But what about boots? Will you be purchasing a new pair this year? If so, you'll want to consider these tips when making your selection.
Choose boots that are insulated and waterproof. This is especially important for people whose feet tend to feel cold because of diabetes or another circulatory issue such as PAD or Raynaud's disease.
Treat your new boots with a waterproofing compound, just to be safe.
If possible, select boots made of leather, which will allow proper airflow and keep feet dry. Moisture is the culprit behind a variety of issues including odor and toenail fungus.
If you choose rubber boots, be sure that they are fully lined to absorb moisture.
Your new boots should have low heels and thick rubber soles with deep groves for maximum traction. This will minimize the risk of slipping or falling, which can cause a variety of foot and ankle injuries.
As long as you're shopping, pick up a couple of pairs of new wool socks, too. Wool is the best material for warmth and does a great job of wicking moisture away from the feet.
Above all, pay attention to your feet. Ignore sales people who tell you that your new boots need time to stretch or mold to your feet. If a boot is not comfortable in the store, it never will be, and it's not right for you.
