Osteoarthritis is a Painful Podiatric Problem

What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that is the result of wear and tear on the joints. Inflammation and injury to the joint cause a breaking down of cartilage tissues, resulting in pain, swelling, decreased range of motion, and deformity. Osteoarthritis is more common in older people, as it usually develops slowly and progresses over a long period of time.

What Are the Symptoms of Foot and Ankle Osteoarthritis?

Symptoms of foot and ankle osteoarthritis often include tenderness or pain; difficulty moving, walking, or bearing weight; redness, stiffness, or swelling in the joint.

Each foot has 28 bones and more than 30 joints, so it stands to reason that they are at risk of osteoarthritis. Be alert to symptoms as described above, especially in:

  • the joint of the big toe and foot bone.

  • the joints of the foot that involve the heel bone, the inner mid-foot bone, and the outer mid-foot bone.

  • the joint where the ankle and shinbone meet.

What Can I Do to Help My Arthritic Feet?

Your choice of footwear is the single most important element of caring for your feet and ankles. If you have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, be mindful when selecting new shoes. Fashion can no longer be top priority. Have your feet professionally measured every time you go to the foot store. Arthritis can be a factor in age-related foot size changes. Choose sensible, flexible shoes that offer a comfortable, wide toe box and a low heel. Rubber soles provide additional cushioning and stability.

How Will My Podiatrist Treat My Foot and Ankle Osteoarthritis?

After diagnosis, foot and ankle osteoarthritis can be treated in many ways. Surgery is a possibility, but it is rarely necessary. Your foot doctor will try non-surgical methods first. Possible approaches include:

  • Anti-inflammatory and pain relieving medications, both prescription and over the counter

  • Custom orthotics, shoe inserts that provide comfort and stability

  • Steroid injections
