Stay Safe While On a Hike

Many people enjoy getting outdoors for a long hike, even when there's snow on the ground. Are you one of them? Hiking is a great exercise for your whole body, but it's important to take a few steps to ensure the health and safety of your feet.

  • Trim toenails in advance of your adventure. When your toenails are too long, they can cause discomfort as they repeatedly hit the front of your boot. Trim your toenails a day or two before you hit the trail. Minimize your risk of ingrown toenails by using a clipper, rather than scissors, and trimming straight across. Never round the corners as you might on your fingernails.

  • Check on your gear. Make sure that your boots and laces are in good condition. Replace them if they are broken or worn out. Boots should be waterproof and should have thick lug soles to ensure maximum traction on snow and ice. Wool socks will do the best job of keeping your feet warm and dry.

  • Practice good hygiene. Wash and dry your feet well on the morning of your hike to minimize the risk of contracting toenail fungus.

  • Bring along plenty of safety supplies including moleskin and bandages to prevent and treat blisters, dry socks, Mylar blankets, water, and high-protein snacks.

  • Stay alert! Obstacles that can lead to foot and ankle injuries can be harder to spot in winter. Keep an eye out for rocks, roots, and other hazards.

  • When you get home, change out of your hiking gear, wash and dry your feet once more, and put your feet up in front of the fire for a little while. You've earned a break.
