Arthritis and Joint Pains

Arthritis is a degenerative disease that affect the different joints in the body. This can happen anywhere but more frequently affects the joints in our feet. The feet is composed of more than 30 joints. Each joint responsible for moving the different bones and muscles in the feet.

The feet is a prime candidate of arthritis because of its huge role in supporting our body weight. Almost all of our movement require the feet, from walking to jumping. Arthritic conditions are commonly associated with aging which can be due to the abuse it suffers through the years.

Arthritis affects the cartilages which provides a natural cushioning effect. It hardens the cartilage which stiffens the joints. It interferes with the joints flexibility making it difficult if not painful to move the feet.

Arthritis like any other disease when diagnosed early makes it easier for us to treat it. It saves you from possible complications that could lead to long term disabilities. A podiatrist can help identify if you are suffering from foot arthritis.

Gout is a type of arthritis characterized by a burning sensation, swelling and stiffness in the joints. Gout commonly occurs in the big toe and caused by too much uric acid intake. Uric acid crystals are deposited in the joints of the big toe. Over time these crystals harden the joints making them inflexible and even causes toe deformity.

Men are at greater risk for developing gout. People who are overweight, heavy alcohol drinkers and those who eat too much meat are high risk candidates for gout.

Osteoarthritis affects the hyaline cartilage. It severely affects the joints and makes moving the joints difficult if not painful. Long term osteoarthritis can lead to bunion formation. This is a foot deformity that can affect joint movement and makes walking and standing painful.

Rheumatoid arthritis can cause joint pains and lead to several foot deformities. This include hammertoes, claw toes and bunions. Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects the joint at the ball of the foot. It causes inflammation destroying the joints and surrounding tissues.
