Why Can’t I Feel My Feet?

Having a sensation of numbing and tingling in your feet and ankles can be caused by several issues, some of which are temporary annoyances and some that may indicate systemic health issues like diabetes. Patients with diabetes should have regular visits with their foot doctor to catch issues before they worsen.

Some of the more common reasons to have numbness and tingling sensations in your feet and ankles include the following:

  • Your foot fell asleep—A common cause of losing feeling in your foot is sitting in one position for too long. A temporarily pinched nerve may be the cause. During long road or plane trips, make a habit of getting up and stretching your legs, so your feet don’t fall asleep.

  • Neuroma—This is a nerve growth that can interfere with proper nerve functioning and lead to a numbing sensation. Morton’s neuroma is a condition that occurs between the third and fourth toes.

  • Wearing poorly fitted shoes—Tight-fitting footwear can cut off blood circulation in your feet, causing them to lose feeling. Be sure to have your feet properly measured when you buy new shoes, so they are comfortable and supportive but not constricting.

  • Diabetic neuropathy—This is a major complication of diabetes that can cause you to lose the feeling in your feet and it can lead to infection and amputation, so be sure to see your foot doctor if you can’t feel your feet.
