Why Do My Arches Hurt?

The health of your arches depends on having the proper arch support for your foot type. If your arches are too high or too low, it often leads to arch pain and misalignment of the foot and ankle that also radiates problems right up your spine to your knees, hips, and back as well. See your foot doctor to trace and treat your arch problems accurately.

3 of the many possible causes of arch pain include the following:

  1. Plantar fasciitis—The plantar fascia is the wide band of tissue covering the bottom of your foot that helps to form your arch. While this tissue is strong, it is still susceptible to developing tiny tears and stretching that can cause severe arch pain that often radiates to the heel area in a condition called plantar fasciitis.

  2. Poorly fitting shoes and improper arch support—Wearing poorly fitting shoes with poor arch support is a major cause of arch pain and discomfort. Your foot doctor can perform a physical exam and computerized gait analysis to determine your foot type and see which orthotic supports are right for your feet.

  3. Stress fracture—A tiny break or crack in one of the many small bones of the foot can radiate pain to the arch and other parts of the foot and ankle. Stress fractures can be hard to pinpoint, so be sure to see your foot doctor for an evaluation and treatment.
