Cracked Heels Are Never Fun

Cracked heels can occur at any time of the year. Knowing how to prevent them and take care of them when something does happen can be helpful to ensure your health. When you need to avoid your heels from cracking, you should keep these tips in mind.

Preventing Heels from Cracking

  • Wear the proper footwear—avoid sandals, flip-flops, shoes with skinny heels, and too-tight shoes. It would also help your feet if you avoided shoes with an open back as they provide no support to the areas of the foot that need it the most.

  • Don’t cross your legs—while this may seem like a strange tip; sitting with your legs crossed causes circulation issues and cracking of the heels.

  • Custom orthotics—custom orthotics are a great way to even the weight distribution, which helps cushion your heels.

  • Padded socks—padded socks (clinically tested) can also help because there isn't much pressure on the heel. It also minimizes rubbing and friction.

  • Foot cream—rubbing on a thicker foot cream at night can help lock in moisture.

  • Drinking water—water helps your skin stay hydrated, so you need to ensure you drink enough to stay healthy.

  • Take care of your feet—when you wash your feet, don't use harsh soaps, and strip your feet of the oils they need. You should also never remove calluses or other skin issues if you have neuropathy or diabetes. You could cause an infection to occur. After you shower, you should also ensure you use a pumice stone twice a week to prevent the skin from thickening.

  • Silicon heel cup—a silicon heel cup will keep the heel moisturized and keep your heel pad from expanding.

  • Daily inspection—be sure to inspect your feet daily for issues. That is especially necessary if you have diabetes as your feet are incredibly delicate.
