Recognizing Hallux Limitus

Hallux limitus is a condition that causes your big toe to become stiff. It causes issues with mobility, and you will have a decreased range of movement, and you will experience pain in the joint. It can also lead to arthritis of your toe and the collective. It is common for people to have this issue, and most people don't understand this is a problem until they can't move their toes and experience horrible pain.

Treating Hallux Limitus

Orthotics—Custom orthotics are something a podiatrist will recommend because they are custom made to fit your particular needs. These shoes will take the stress away from your toe. While they may cost more than the ones you get in a store, they are specially designed for you. They will work more efficiently for your feet and last longer as well.

RICE—RICE stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Remember, notice the area for more than ten minutes. Also, when using compression, ensure you are not cutting off your circulation.

Stretching—stretching your big toe will help you keep your mobility longer. In addition, it may help with the pain. However, it depends on the mobility you have in your foot. If you are not able to move your toe well, the stiffness can cause more pain.

Surgery—If nothing else can work, your podiatrist will recommend surgery to restore the motions to your foot and help your mobility. The surgery will also help you have relief from pain.

If left untreated, you will see you have an enlargement of the bone at your joint. As a result, you can experience limping and pain exacerbated by walking, running, and athletic activity, and you can develop calluses. When your foot is compromised, your back can suffer too.
