Bromodosis Is No Joke

Sure, it's funny when a sitcom character takes off his shoes and everyone reacts to the smell of his feet, but foot odor is no joke in real life. Have you ever heard of bromodosis? That's the word that medical professionals use to describe excessive, unmanaged foot odor, and it's a common medical condition that can be not only annoying but embarrassing as well.

There is one simple cause of unpleasant foot odor: perspiration. There are millions of sweat glands on your body, and more than 250,000 of them are located in your feet. Sweat accumulates on the feet and in the socks and shoes and enables bacteria to grow on the skin. When those bacteria feed off dead skin cells, they cause foot odor.

The most effective step you can take to prevent bromodosis is to implement excellent hygiene practices. Wash your feet with antibacterial soap daily and dry them well. We also recommend the following:

  • Ensure that your feet remain as dry as possible during the day. If they start to feel sweaty, change your socks as soon as possible. Don't get caught empty-handed. Keep extra pairs in your car, desk, and pocketbook.

  • Insist on socks and shoes made of fabrics that let your feet "breathe." Avoid synthetics that trap sweat.

  • Don't wear the same shoes or run in the same sneakers two days in a row. Use an antifungal or deodorant foot powder before you put your shoes on and prevent bacteria growth by spraying your shoes with a disinfectant like Lysol before you put them away.

  • Don't let bacteria grow under your toenails. Keep them well-trimmed. Remember to trim straight across to prevent ingrown toenails.
