Broken Toe Myths Revealed
Many folks are under the impression injured or broken toes are likely to heal just fine all by themselves, but this is not the case. Be sure to see your foot doctor for a proper evaluation. Hairline toe fractures can be very difficult to trace and may radiate pain to other areas, so visit your foot doctor for proper care.
2 common misconceptions about broken toes include the following:
Broken toes will get better on their own—This is mostly untrue, and it’s more likely you will cause problems by ignoring a broken toe. While treating a broken toe may be as simple as taping it to the toe next door (buddy taping), leaving a toe fracture without any support can cause it to heal improperly. Surgery may then be needed to realign and properly set the toe.
If you can walk on it, then it must not be broken—A toe fracture may exhibit intermittent pain, and in many cases, you will still be able to walk without too much difficulty. You are likely just making the injury worse by adding weight and pressure to the break. Don’t ever try to just “walk-off” toe and foot injuries.
