Healing and Preventing Cracked Heels
Also known as heel fissures, cracks in the skin of the heels are very common. Heel cracks can be unsightly and embarrassing. Worse, a tiny crack can cause a great deal of pain. The good news is that heel cracks are easily prevented and treated.
Cracked heels occur when the skin on the feet becomes excessively dry. They can be caused by a variety of other factors, including:
Low humidity. Heel cracks are most common in winter, when the air is dry, but they can occur at any time of year.
Circulation issues, including diabetes.
Carrying excess weight, which can cause the heel to expand and the skin to split.
Inadequate nutrition.
Standing for long periods of time at work or at home, especially on hard floors made of wood or tile.
Excessive periods of time barefoot or in open shoes while indoors.
Badly fitted shoes that offer insufficient support to the heel.
Hormonal imbalances.
Poor hygiene.
If the skin on your feet gets so dry that a small crack develops, soak your feet in a tub of warm water (or enjoy a worm bath or shower), then dry your feet well, apply a thin layer of heavy cream or petroleum jelly and wear pair of cotton socks overnight.
Here are some helpful tips to prevent foot cracks from developing:
Moisturize your feet every day, twice a day. Focus on your heels. Use an exfoliating lotion once a week to remove dead skin.
Try a pumice stone to reduce and remove of calluses. They are easily purchased at any drug store.
Eat a balanced, healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals.
Hydrate from the inside out. Drink plenty of water and other non-caffeinated beverages.
