Keep Your Feet Safe: Tips for Runners

Many families are enjoying nice weather with outdoor activities including hiking, biking, jogging and walking. With that increase in activity, we notice an increase in the number of patients visiting our office complaining of foot and ankle injuries. Here are some tips to help you stay safe:

  1. Footwear choices are important. If you're headed out on the trail, choose closed-toe hiking boots with cushioned support. Make sure laces are tight. Are you a distance runner? Your running shoes should be replaced every six months or 500 miles, whichever comes first. Break new shoes in slowly to prevent blisters.

  2. Save your inexpensive flip-flops for a trip to the beach. Don't wear them for exercise, and never wear them if you'll be driving. They are a common cause of summer auto accidents.

  3. Shoe size changes as we age, so make sure your shoes fit. Get your feet professionally measured at least once a year.

  4. Sprains and fractures often result from accidents that could have been prevented. While you're exercising, focus on what you're doing. Answer the phone or reply to your texts later. If you like to play music through headphones, keep volume at a reasonable level. Watch where you're going. At night, use lights to see and be seen.

  5. Maintain and improve bone health with a balanced diet rich in lean protein, colorful fruits and vegetables, and foods high in calcium and vitamin D.

  6. Many people believe that gentle yoga and tai chi improve balance and coordination. Try adding a class to your regimen and see what happens.
