3 Causes of Recurrent Toenail Fungus
A fungal toenail infection can slowly proliferate and spread to other toenails without causing many symptoms at first. Still, when the toenails become thick, brittle, and odor-producing, the infection can be very difficult to eradicate without help from your foot doctor completely.
Some of the causes of recurring fungal toenail infections may include the following:
Ineffective and incomplete treatment—Over-the-counter remedies for fungal toenails often only partially treat the infection, and it returns. Be sure to seek treatment from your podiatrist to ensure complete eradication.
Re-exposure to the fungi—Be sure to rid your home shower and bath of microbes and avoid outside exposure at public facilities by protecting your feet.
A compromised immune system—Systemic diseases like diabetes and artery problems can cause the immune system to function poorly, which increases the length and severity of infections like fungal toenails.
Treatment and prevention of fungal toenail infections involve the following methods:
Medicated sprays and powders—Apply antimicrobial spray or powder directly on your feet and inside your shoes to kill the bugs before they can spread.
Protect your feet and keep them clean and dry—Wear shower shoes or sandals when using public facilities like locker rooms and showers. Keep your feet and shoes dry by switching your shoes every other day, helping kill the microbes. Wash bacteria and fungi off of your feet with mild soap at least once a day.
Toenail debridement or removal—In severe disease cases, toenail debridement (shaving) or complete removal may be necessary to kill the fungi completely.
