Toenail Conditions and its Medical Implications

Identifying the early signs and symptoms of a medical disorder gives you the best chance of a full recovery. Sadly, the earliest signs of a disease are so subtle that it only gets our full attention once the illness has manifested its major symptoms. The disease has progressed so far that it requires multiple treatments or worse, the chances for a full recovery become slim.

Changes in our toenails can be a symptom of an underlying illness. Thick toenails, discolored nail beds could be an early sign of a disease. Visiting a podiatrist for any changes in your toenails can give you the best chance of catching the disease in its early stages.

Discoloration

Regularly check your toenails for any discoloration. Toenails are normally clear. The changes in color usually corresponds to its causative agent. Yellowing of the toenails indicate a fungal infection. But this can also be caused by liver disease or jaundice. Graying of the toenails can be the side effect of certain medications. Bacteria can leave our toenails looking green and brownish toenails can be a sign of malnutrition or thyroid disease.

Thick Toenails

Fungal infections are a constant concern. Infections could thicken the nails. If left untreated it makes the nail brittle and crumble. But this is not only the cause. Psoriasis which causes above normal production of skin cells can lead to thick nails.

Loose Toenails

Toenails may fall off as a result of injury. If toenails become loose even in the absence of a foot injury, an underlying illness could be the culprit. Thyroid disease, poor blood circulation and allergy to medications can give you loose toenails.

Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown toenails are often the result of improperly trimmed nails. We sometimes cut into the curved edges of our toenails that it instead of growing back into its normal shape, its outer edges grow inwards. This can be painful but the real danger is it can also lead to infection.
